Why do you work in the nonprofit sector? Why not teach? Or work for the government? Or (shudder) corporate?

Mon, August 18, 2008 - 12:44 PM> Why not teach?
- because (most ) teachers are among the most used cogs in the machine - max responsibility w/least power, maximum exposure w/ least protection, first hand experience and no power to act on it.
(nonetheless, i teach. just not as part of any system. I won't be making a living a it, but am more satisfied w/results.)
> Or work for the government?
-see -'teacher' ..but without the perks. (except money and job security. yawn)
> Or (shudder) corporate?
- at least the corporate bastards are mostly honest about their cynicism. its about the money. sometimes its a day job that supports an art or community-service habit.
usually, non-profit is the least of the evils. some nonprofits make some attempt at doing something real, outside the stranglehold of corrupt, inept and ultraconservative gov't. some even succeed.
nonprofits attempt to create sufficient stability to preserve the original goals of a group, against the tides of fortune, ego, cults of personality, corruption, politics - A laudable goal. sometimes they sort of succeed - a track record that far outstrips that of pretty much any other institution or social/political construct.
its the only game in town..
