I'm on a committee anon.

(someone just emailed it to me)

Oh give me your pity, I'm on a committee which means that, from morning to night,
We attend and amend and contend and defend, without any conclusion in sight.
We confer and concur, we defer and demur and reiterate all of our thoughts.
We revise the agenda with frequent addenda, and consider a load of reports.
We compose and propose, we suppose and oppose, and the points of procedure are fun.
But though various notions are brought up as motions, there's terribly little gets done!
We resolve and absolve, but we never dissolve, since it's out of the question for us.
What a shattering pity to end our committee, where else could we make such a fuss!

~

Fact or Fiction ?

Gathering in Mazatlan, Mexico -- winter 2009

Living with rural people in Central Mexico, I discovered that wealth is not how much you have, it is how much you appreciate what you have. This is true for these people who live in touch with nature fishing and farming. They have land to support themselves. If the money system disappeared, they would be fine.

The family I live with in Roblito (http://www.solomax.com/roblito.html ) has given me access to a large plot of land to create an eco-village art and adventure school. Seeking friends to help with this project, I'm building a grassroots network, called the Action Hero Network (www.actionheronetwork.net) and hosting a festival in Mazatlan this coming winter, which you are invited to take part in creating: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=19571155904

This project has been in the works for nearly a decade. In 2007, we had 20 people visit the land: http://tribes.tribe.net/roblito/photos/306df4b8-dd26-4d8d-a094-3d90dd45604c

I'll be happy to share more... so please email: cor.contact(at)gmail.com

This is a co-op center and festival for all non-profits to use to their advantage.

Tax refund - how to spend?

This question came up on the blog of a Tribe friend, and I thought it might make for good discussion here.

My intention is to give mine away. I mean the "extra" money that GWB is supposedly going to "refund" to us. Of course there are lots of consumer goods I want, but I am also doing okay (not great, but okay) financially, and I'm mad at Bush for this because I think it's a cheap publicity stunt.

Despite my modest means, I do have a budget for philanthropy - if that word can be applied to such small gift amounts. And because I've always worked for nonprofits (hence the modest means!) I'm sensitive to the needs of organizations trying to do right. There are so many areas that could use our support: environment, health, arts, etc.

What do you all think of this phenomenon?
Who works in an organization that does some or all of these?
How many of you make use of this info as a "consumer" (i.e. from nonprofits other than your own)?

I've tried subscribing to some feeds thru NetVibes, but typically nonprofits don't keep enough interesting flow of information to make the reading very worthwhile. Sometimes it's all press releases and such. I think it has the potential to be interesting if done well.

Your thoughts?

Anyone know anyone at Global Fund for Women?

Hi all,

I am new to this tribe, and though I do not have a senior-level position in a nonprofit, I aim to one day soon. I joined this tribe because even though it's not directly applicable to me, there's not a general nonprofit tribe, and I enjoy reading about other people who are doing what I want to do - it's inspirational. I hope you will excuse the intrusion.

That said, I am trying to get a job with Global Fund for Women (San Francisco). Does anyone know anyone there I could talk to about the organization? Their website is pretty limited, and the job listing discouraged phone calls/emails, but I would really like to find out more about the organization. Thanks so much for any tips!

And thanks for having this tribe - it's really interesting reading the postings describing what everyone does - really helpful for someone wanting to get into nonprofit work.

I've been running the company I work for for a bit over a year now (employed here for 10 years) but haven't done any fundraising as of yet as I have absolutely no experience other than watching a previous directors frustration with much of her hard work bringing in very little funding. We are going to start to have monthly fundraising meetings. anybody have any good suggestions for either fundraising ideas or good ways to run a fundraising committee?

Thanks in advance..

New Online Project Management Tool- Many Nonprofit Applications

Dear Directorfolk,

I'd like to make you aware of a new online project management tool in Beta called MyQuire. www.myquire.com. It's free and fast to sign up and start seeing what the technology can do for your workload!

MyQuire is a great way to share electronic files and information among groups. It also has: calendaring, task management and delegation, functions, chat feature. In exchange for feedback, the company is looking for testers who would be open to publicity about how they're using MyQuire and a year of premium account membership and technical support assistance.

So What Would You Do With MyQuire:

From any Web browser, MyQuire lets you manage volunteer deliverables, organize all the timelines and to do lists you'd have in producing an annual event. MyQuire creates a virtual community among your team with user profiles, real-time chat, file storage, calendaring and messaging.

Folks I've talked to really like the interface of this technology and how even your most technology averse colleagues can start using all the tools in one place in a matter of minutes. Visit www.myquire.com to create an account and thanks for reading- I'd love to have your feedback sent my way! If you're interested in becoming a Beta site let me know and I'll get in touch to get you up to speed if you need it.

Best wishes,
Rachel Medanic
Any one have any ideas about how to figure this out, or where to get info about this or where the heck to start!??

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Round of introductions?

Hi all! I meant new to this tribe, not to the nonprofit sector, which I've worked in most of my life (save for my teen years as a store clerk). I've worked in development -- research and then individual giving -- for about 15 years now. Just something I fell into, like so many fundraisers. I cut my teeth at a university and am now with a national nonprofit in DC. Like all professions, it has its charms and its discontents.

I'd love to see some good discussion here (as opposed to self-promotion of one's services) and will try to start some threads. Meanwhile, could we do a round of intros to see who's here and get a sense of their professional backgrounds, challenges, goals, etc?

Best,
~F.

Board vs. ED

Alright, I am a director at a small, 3 person NPO.

Our ED is a bit of a slacker...she uses her kids as an excuse not to come into work and maybe is in the office 3 hours per week [this happens a lot, I'm not mom-bashing], often takes credit for others work, and straight up bullshits the board at times in board meetings.

she is also very "nice" but does not realize we, the other Directors, see through her bs.

Yesterday our board president asked me out to lunch [next week] to discuss the ED, and asked me not to tell her. I think he has suspicions she is slacking.

I could easily unload on her...totally not my style; and yes, I have addressed some of these issues with her directly...like coming into work.

What do you think is a good way to handle this?

I like not having my "boss" here; but the organization is suffering.

Any thoughts?

No more "non-profits"

I would like to suggest that we all stop using the phrase "non-profit" to describe our business. Ours is the only industry that defines itself by what it DOESN't do. The phrase "public benefit organization" describes what we do so much more accurately - and also motivates me better.

As a public benefit organization, we offer services that benefit the public. When we raise funds for our work, we are merely suggesting that the public pay us to provide the services which they can't or won't provide themselves. We feed the hungry, house the homeless, protect the environment so that individuals don't have to. If the public values those services, they should pay for them, just like they pay someone else to dispose of their trash, clean their streets and provide electricity to their homes.

For too long, people have funded non-profits as if they were charities, rather than public service providers. And the public benefit organizations have appealed for funding as if they were begging.

Our services are valuable, our organizations are necessary and we are not charities.

New Breed of Philanthropists

New Breed of Philanthropists Combines Entrepreneurial,
Charitable Goals (11/14/06)

The line between philanthropy and business continues to blur as
a new generation of philanthropists, mostly young billionaires,
apply business tactics and strategies in the service of charity,
the New York Times reports.

"Philanthropreneurs" such as eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, who is
using investment capital and contributions from others to expand
the microloan industry, and AOL co-founder Stephen Case, who is
investing $250 million in companies that help consumers gain
control of their health care, are driven to do good while earning
a profit. It's an approach that reflects both the culture of the
information technology field in which they made their fortunes
and their skepticism of the current foundation model, which they
see as insufficiently effective and too slow in responding to
urgent problems.

One of the more thoughtful practitioners of this "hybrid
philanthropy," former eBay president Jeffrey S. Skoll, has
committed $90 million through the Skoll Foundation to social
entrepreneurs and their nonprofits, including the Institute for
OneWorld Health, a nonprofit drug company, and KickStart, a
nonprofit business that develops low-tech agricultural machines.
Meanwhile, the Case Foundation recently awarded $5 million to
PlayPumps International, a nonprofit group that is working to
improve access to clean water in African villages. "The hard
truth is Philanthropy 1.0 hasn't worked well enough," Case told
a group of foundation executives in January, referring to
philanthropic models that were spawned by the industrial
capitalism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. "If you'll
forgive the computer metaphors, our system needs an upgrade."

Despite such bold assessments, proponents of the new philanthropy
have attracted little criticism from experts in the field. At the
same time, however, they have yet to wow their critics. "I come
at this [wondering] what are the advantages the melded or hybrid
models bring," said Mark Rosenman, a professor at Union Institute
and University in Cincinnati. "While I have no problem with phil-
anthropy and socially responsible business being joined, I do
have one with a for-profit enterprise being called philanthropy."

Strom, Stephanie. "A Fresh Approach: What's Wrong With Profit?"
New York Times 11/13/06.

(1) Panel on Nonprofit Sector Proposes Additional
Recommendations to Congress (4/26/06)

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector ( http://nonprofitpanel.org/ )
has issued a supplemental report with additional recommen-
dations to Congress and the nonprofit sector as part of its
continuing effort to strengthen the accountability of the
nation's 1.3 million charitable organizations.

The report, a companion to the final report delivered by
the panel to Congress in June 2005, incorporates input from
leaders across the nonprofit community and makes recommen-
dations in nine areas, including international grantmaking
and charitable solicitation.

"These recommendations are another part of the charitable
sector's commitment to come together and ensure that its
organizations meet the highest possible ethical standards,"
said Diana Aviv, the panel's executive director and pres-
ident and CEO of Independent Sector. "The panel will con-
tinue to work with the sector and government officials to
encourage implementation of its comprehensive proposals."

I always invisioned a tour of musicians that went to cities and played benefits for non-profits at cost (meaning pay the bands and the non-profit keeps the rest). It's the best of both worlds really. Concerts are great fund-raisers, and non-profits are a great fan base for grassroots bands. Why isn't this already in the works. Hey wait, maybe it is.

retirement pension options for ED's?

My organization already has a 401(k) program, but after 20 years of giving your best working years, can't we also get some kind of pension? Have you checked out the sweet pension deal the public staffers get? I'm actively researching options... I have found a thing called a Rabbi Trust, and "deferred compensation", but it's all a bit technical and confusing. Anybody out there have any experience or advice? Thanks.

Question for non-profits when buying property

Hello, I am starting a non-profit and a potential seller of property to my non-profit wants to add in a buy back option for himself into the purchase and sales agreement after a few years. This will give me the time to run my program with the property but in the event that he wants to buy it back later he wants the option to do so for a set price/market value. Are there any problems with this?

Thanks for your time.

New Disaster Relief Organization in WAVELAND,MISS./KATRINA

Hello group,
I am in New Orleans with a group that was formed around a kitchen and has turned into something tangible and effective.
We are forming a new organization named " Emergency Communities"
Mission Statement :"A grassroots org designed to provide rapid response to natural disasters based upon an emergency community model."

We are currently providing a kitchen for hot meals with a capability of up to 3000 meals per day, a full service medical clininc,A child care space, bulk distribution center for all manner of goods from dryfood, clothing, bedding, tents, etc.
A community center to provide a meeting place for the community to come back together and start the road to rebuilding. In the community center we have a stage with music, performers and acts from all walks of life.
The desitre to rebuild community by providing them a place to come in ,have a hot meal, listen to music and smile with their neighbors brings instant results in building the morlae of a community while also relieving basic survival needs as they go home with all they need from our free "store".
Currently we are funding this out of our own pockets and the support of donated resources that come in sporadically and i would like to ctreat a structure that will allow us to move this to the next level which means funding.
I have been in business development for many years but this is my first time putting together a non-profit initiative and I am looking for some help and guidance from anyone and everyone.
This is a project that even FEMA,RED CROSS and the local agencies have embraced and are coming by daily to watch so they can use into the future.
Ok, So How do I do this? how do I write the "business plan" equivilant and seek grants so that we can continue to work down here.
Thanks
Scott
Ps. this place is run by hippies, burners, artists and the like so that brings the elements of humanity that intrigues so many visitors

I am a member of this group. This should be interesting to folks in Portland and Oregon! Similar Laws could start bankrupting other states, too.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MEASURE 37: THE DYNAMIC FUTURE OF OREGON'S LAND USE PLANNING AND PROPERTY RIGHTS

Portland State University, Vanport Room 338, Smith Memorial Student Union on May 25th at 6:00pm

The Community Development Student Group has been working hard for several months behind the scenes to bring the Measure 37 Forum to Portland State. This forum will be a space where the people who hold divergent opinions on this issue can come together in an environment that supports dialogue. In addition, the evening will be informative for the public, faculty, and students.

The future of the Urban Growth Boundary, land use planning, property rights, and zoning is at stake. The issues surrounding Measure 37 are very important to the long-term health of our community, and a solid understanding of them is imperative if we are to navigate the oft-conflicting desires of Oregonian's vision for the future. One of the reasons for this forum is that many of those responsible for land use decisions are still unsure as to the implications and potential impacts of the measure. The initial attempts to implement the measure are only now being explored. This means that now is a critical time in the development of the measure, our response to the measure, and for discourse about its effects. This forum is an opportunity for meaningful community dialogue around the issue of sustainable and equitable land use planning. Don't miss it!

We hope you will join us on May 25, 2005 at 6:00pm. Laura Oppenheimer, (Oregonian), will introduce the event. The speaker panel will include Lane Shetterly (Oregon Land Conservation Development Commission), Sonny Conder (Metro), Ross Day (Oregonians in Action), Pramod Parajuli, (Portland State University Sustainability Professor), Robert Clay (Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association), and a representative from 1000 friends of Oregon. Ethan Seltzer, the director of the School of Urban Studies and Planning at Portland State University, will moderate the event.

Resources for finding volunteer board members

My company is run by a volunteer board (I'm the CEO but I answer to them, they set policy, final say on budget, etc.) and the terms of the board members are ending in June and many of them will be leaving us then for various personal reasons. So we need to find some new volunteer board members and pretty quickly. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions at all as to where to look? A few of the adults who live in our homes have some pretty involved parents who I'm thinking of asking but I'm really not sure where else to look.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Will The CDBG cuts hurt

Will the pending Community Development Block Grants cuts hurt anyone on this tribe..

Why are we so quiet? This is what is happening in PA,

about whats coming we must all act now, or at least those that chose too.....

Bush Budget Community Spending Limits Could be Set in a Week

The Bush Budget Crisis comes sooner than we think.

Between March 2nd and March 8th, the Senate and House Budget Committees will 'mark up' the budgets. These mark-ups will set the spending limits and ceilings for the broad areas of the budget--Education, Housing, Human Services--the works. If the House and Senate vote for these markups, the Congress must remain within these limits in approving funding in each area.

The Bush administration wants Congress to approve spending limits NOW!

What Can We Do About It?

Go to the new Bush Budget Pennsylvania Information and Action Center on the Bush Budget Web Site

Take Action

*Organizations--Sign the Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) Letter to Specter
*Participate in the National Budget Call-In Days, March 2nd & March 8th
*Send your own Emails to Senators Specter and Santorum

And if you forget these links, just go to PhillyNeighborhoods.org and the "BushBudget.com" Banner will take you there.

Act Now--Before It's too Late

New Community Bicycle Co-op

I had previously posted about this project within the bicycle-themed tribes, but the response was minimal. In the interim, our new co-op has been growing rapidly and we are quickly realizing that the internal organizational structure will require a more pro-active approach.

http://sopobikes.org/

We recently held a surprisingly successful first fundraising event, generating a lot of enthusiasm and publicity for the cause of bringing a greater community-based resource to the rather invisible and fragmented biking community in Atlanta.

With the presence of money in a new bank account, there is a pronounced need to focus ourselves as a discrete organization rather than the "collective" we have been up to now. The consensus is to incorporate as a non-profit, but to hold off on pursuing tax-exempt status until we see a clear benefit in our doing so. However, we see an immediate need to consider what will be required in order to function as a member-owned, consumer cooperative (e.g. a membership policy).

I am curious if others have had experience setting up a not-for-profit co-op such as this? What special issues will we need to consider, if any, in the context of drafting our articles and our bylaws, and what might we need to factor in w/ respect to our future tax status?

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Much thanks,

Adam

Starting a non profit

I am so overwhelmed when I start to look at the process of starting a non profit. I really don't know where to even begin. Is it difficult to start something like this independently? Would it be beneficial to work with a lawyer? I have a mission and know what I want the organization to look like. It is just so mind boggling when I start to look at the many ways to form a non profit. Can anyone offer any advice?
Tinkers Workshop and Cycles of Change need your hiking/biking stuff...(non profit)...

Cycles of Change is a non profit organization based in East Oakland California that gives inner city youth the opportunity to learn how to build bicycles, and go on bike trips. Since early 1997 over 1200 children have earned their bicycle, putting it together themselves or with help from a small dedicated staff along with countless volunteers and older kids helping.
Cycles of Change also have taken over 1000 bike trips with groups of middle schoolers all over the Bay Area to places of great historical, environmental, or cultural interest. We have also been on a few bike tours of up to 5 days.
Cycles of Change survives from grants, along with monitary/bikes/parts/tools donations.
Cycles of Change works with other non profits including the East Bay Asian Youth Center and Tinkers Workshop.
We are always in need of tax deductable donations, volunteers, old bike parts, tools, camping gear, rain coats...
Ride on!
Cycles of Change does not have a websight.
visit EBAYC.org or tinkersworkshop.org

Volunteer recognition programs

I am trying to come up with a volunteer recognition idea for our school volunteers. Most of the volunteer recognition programs I have run for work (ie, volunteer appreciation lunches, event tickets, etc.) are not appropriate for school volunteers who aren't available during the day, so I am looking for some good ideas or gifts.

Thanks!

Effective, low-cost methods of finding staffing?

I am the CEO of a non profit company in Sonoma County that runs group homes for the developmentally disabled. We are in a pretty bad staffing shortage currently. We have placed ads with the local junior college and University and in the Press Democrat and on tribe, and are not getting as good of a response as we would like. Any suggestions as to effective ways of finding staff? - the more cost effective the better

Thanks
Corporate bait or real value?

Would anyone comment on the following? I got into this tribe because I was debating starting an financial education (for kids and adults) related NPO, but simply can't afford the time quite yet...

A friend here at Olympia Funding, a large 3.2Bil mortgage company, is doing something very interesting for an opera company he supports: he's donating 10% of gross income from each mortgage that originates based on the opera company's promotion. The average file generates about $4000, so it doesn't take too many to turn into some bucks.

They have a newsletter they send out to patrons and have him in that.

Know any NPO's that might be interested in that? My personal preference would be something to do with either financial literacy or visual arts related. I get a tax writeoff, they get income, and the more new clients I get the more cash they get. Simple enough, eh? And it reflects well on both of us, most of my clients are raving fans. I also work closely with CPA's, and would likely get them involved as well.

Thanks for any feedback,

Has anyone tried Monthly payments? I just posted some new buttons on our website giving donors the option to donate monthly. I hope this works!
